This exhibition is not an exhibition. Rather, conceived as a situational, living project, it ignites a theatrical spark in the context of the museum. It leads us to see the exhibition as a flowing, interactive format in the making that is nothing at all without the visitor.
In view of the fact that our modern societies are undergoing a profound redefinition of values under the pressure of individualism, neoliberal practice and global markets, "Protections" raises elementary questions regarding contemporary concepts of art and perception - beyond the promises of a successful modern life.
"Protections" draws our attention to social relations, to their fragility and arbitrariness and to the desire for stability and social order; this clinging to an endangered, damaged protection, the yearning for care and comfort.
"Protections" is a complex, changing, self-questioning mesh of varied experimental designs: from architectural interventions, performances, theatrical forms and performative installations to cinematic, conceptual and discursive studies. The complex and provocative architecture of the Kunsthaus and the social, cultural milieux of the city of Graz form the matrix for all artistic approaches and formulations. The exhibition becomes a new event every day.
