Nine years ago, two friends decided to see the world. They travelled all over Europe, Scandinavia, North America and Australia, on foot and sometimes on bike. On their forays, Lone Twin gave theatre performances for the people they met - often meeting with some surprise, followed by gratitude. Nine years and seven hundred performances later, the two of them have returned home, the journey complete.
Gary Winters and Gregg Whelan are among the most unusual and charming artists in the British live art scene. Playfully they operate in the tradition of strict performance art, Anglo-Saxon street theatre and American stand-up comedy. Bizarre, weird and yet consistent, persevering and stubborn.
In their latest piece - a work commissioned by steirischer herbst and the Austrian début of the two glorious performers -they set out (unsuccessfully, of course) to compile the whole material from this journey in feature-film length and to wrest a meaning from the world. They return to the heart-shaped topography of Brussels, to the banks of Lake Michigan, to the sprawling road network of the centre of Paris, to the North Sea, to the polar circle, to the vineyards of Western Australia, the blue July sky of Lisbon, and to almost everywhere in Switzerland. A presentation of pedestrian knowledge, subjective geographies, wet feet, throat-ache and warm hearts.
