 Sometimes a lounge, sometimes a club – local and supra-regional DJs and musicians will be appearing at the festival centre every evening. PeterLicht is the most profound, underhanded poet of German Indie Pop – and perhaps also the shyest, rarely appearing live. His “Songs of the End of Capitalism” have recently caused a stir. At steirischer herbst he will be “boring into the present with songs and a reading. Seeing what drips out and doing something that is beautiful”, intelligent and playful. Capitalism, “the old rascal”, is “Over, over. Now it’s finally over.“ He is the one who never rests: Khan (Can Oral), one of the most colourful figures of the electronic music and performance scene, operates under countless project names (Captain Comatose, 4e, Gizz TV, Bizz Od, El Turco Loco, etc.) and publishes on as many labels. After growing up in Germany, the son of a Turkish father and Finnish mother spent a long time living in New York, where he ran the world-famous Temple Records store. The art figure Khan is a flesh and blood sacrament of sex and Techno, held against the faceless sterility of the world of dance music. To finish off the musikprotokoll, implicated artists and curators apply their talents to the turntables. Mika Vainio of Pan Sonic, the effervescent Swede Carl Michael of Hauswolff, musikprotokoll curator Christian Scheib, Heike Schlepper and Bernhard Schreiner of the Frankfurt Electro label “feld” and perhaps several more ... Schneider TM alias Dirk Dresselhaus has always been good for surprises. This time around, the bold electrobricoleur suddenly sounds warm and emotional, with ‘real’ instruments contaminating his laptop. A bit of a return to his early Rock’n’Roller days, a bit of Hip Hop, Funk, some African rhythms and a touch of the Seventies – all, of course, with a precise electro-pop feel.  |
